Fighting with the Christmas Spirit, part 1

Today was the opening round of Christmas giveaways from both World of Tanks and Armored Warfare. I will take a look at the tier III Toldi German premium Light Tank from WOT first.

Carrying on the tradition started a few years back, World of Tanks gifts it's playerbase with another lower tiered premium tank http://worldoftanks.com/en/news/pc-browser/22/holiday-surprises/ This time, it's tier III, it's German marked and lots of fun, at least I think so.

Comparing the Toldi to my other tier III German premium, T-15, I started to get a better picture of this tank has going for it. In essence, a slower, under-powered but slightly better armored and armed version of what I already had. For the price I didn't pay, I can live with this. The crew compliment is what I was expecting too. The T-15 has a Commander, Driver, Radio Operator and Loader. The Toldi has a Commander, Gunner and Driver. In other words, it would make a decent supplementary premium for crew training, as long as another Light Tank, premium or tech tree with space for a full crew, was made the primary.

I was expecting to see an invasion of Toldi's when I clicked in for that first battle. While there were still quite a few, as you can see here, I have been a part of nothing-but-gift-tank-battles in the past. For equipment, I borrowed a toolbox and camo net from another tank, currently not in use and went with the fully trained, but unskilled crew that came with the Toldi. I figured, I need another Light Tank crew and it's going to be mostly low tier action they would see anyways.

The battle was a straightforward affair, I climbed the hill on Himmelsdorf, slugged it out with a few enemy tanks at the top, sped down the other side and went to the chapel for a capture. That simply explained action produced these results....

Wow, I was impressed/surprised. However, I was too shocked to see, on the World of Tanks North America forums, some in the playerbase complaining about this tank, while others made claims of just flatout selling theirs and collecting on the garage slot and quickly-spent-elsewhere credits. Excellent, it makes mine that much more rarer.

Meanwhile, the hyped Type 59 has finally arrived https://aw.my.com/us/news/general/free-type-59-everyone along with the 0.12 update. Based on how the vehicles are slotted into their respective tiers, I knew the Type was going to be a lowered level premium, so seeing with my own eyes wasn't too much of a disappointment. The Legend addition to the name was a nice touch, a clear poke at WarGaming and their selected-availability version at a much higher tier.

The side by side comparison against the same tiered T-62 Veteran speaks for itself. Slightly slower to aim, reload and take off the line, but picks up in the armor department.

Queuing up first the Type's first battle, I was greeted with only one vehicle on our team not being another Type. I couldn't help myself and made a comment, about this observation.

Coming in at the middle of the pack, I would still call this a decent game, overall. The slowness of the Type was very noticeable, over to what I have gotten used to from my T-62 Veteran, but still very playable. Things might have moved along a little quicker if I had trained the crew before stepping into this fight, something that was already taken care of after this sortie was concluded.

For both games, these gifts deliver on no promises made. Both are low tiered assets and provide a break from higher tiered action and the stresses that come along with playing at those levels. As free premiums, they are defiantly worth the price I didn't pay for them and will be a part of my gaming career in both titles.
