Before the Type 59 came to Armored Warfare, it was already infamous for other reasons. First, the real world event that put this tank into the spotlight....
....was this picture taken during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. I am old enough to remember seeing this on television, looped on all the major networks as a headline story.
World of Tanks sold a premium, tier VIII Medium Tank Type 59, starting on September 2011 http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php?/topic/58908-world-of-tanks-v67-update/
It was during this time that players discovered this particular premium offering had more strengths than weaknesses, that opponents had a hard time to exploit. It could be said, it was the best tank of it's class and tier, premium or not, at the time.
Owners of this tank would also find others ingame and form impromptu platoons, later called Wolfpacks. The havoc and chaos caused then became the stuff of myth today. Entire battle outcomes were determined those who learned the value of this vehicle. WarGaming, after taking note of what was going on, made the decision to remove the tank from being purchased in January 2012 http://worldoftanks.com/en/news/pc-browser/19/type-59-game-store-removal/
However, through many opportunities to collect one through contests and
other events, people have had chances to add one to their garage ever
since. Despite this, cries for it to go back on sale have rang through the years, mostly ignored by WarGaming.
Finally, the Type 59 of Armored Warfare. Coming in at tier III, this Main Battle Tank is pretty much on par with Soviet peers of the era. The Great Wolfpacks from World of Tanks have yet to be formed and this tank isn't causing nearly the same damage to the game or playerbase as it's other company cousin.
A decent, lower tiered credit earner and very capable on the battlefield, the Type 59 was a welcome addition to my garage at Christmas, when they were handed out, just as it remains now.
